Most homeowners don't actually know what type of roof they have. Here's how to tell and why it matters. 3-tab shingles are the flat, uniform rows common on homes built before 2000. They last 15 to 20 years and run about five to eight thousand to replace. Architectural shingles are thicker with visible dimension and shadow lines. They last 25 to 30 years and handle Tennessee hail and wind much better. If your roof was replaced in the last 15 years, this is most likely what you have. Luxury shingles mimic slate or cedar shake without the weight. They last 30 to 50 years and have the strongest impact and wind ratings you can get in a shingle. Standing seam metal lasts 40 to 70 years and reflects heat to lower energy bills. It costs more upfront but is often cheaper long term than replacing shingles twice.
